Leviathan is an American black metal project formed in San Francisco, California in 1998 by multi-instrumentalist Jef “Wrest” Whitehead. Widely regarded as one of the defining acts in US black metal, the project became known for its suffocating atmosphere, raw emotional intensity, and deeply personal approach to extreme music.
Through a combination of depressive black metal, ambient experimentation, and psychologically harrowing songwriting, Leviathan established itself as one of the most influential and respected names in underground USBM.
