When conversations turn to the origins of heavy metal and hard rock, the spotlight usually lands on the big British names. Dig a little deeper, though, and you will find Sir Lord Baltimore — a US power trio who delivered proto-metal with volume, grit, and very little restraint. Formed in the late 1960s, they helped shape the heavier end of rock before the rulebook had properly been written.
Often mentioned alongside pioneers like Blue Cheer, Sir Lord Baltimore built a reputation on sheer force, fuzzed-out riffs, and performances that felt slightly dangerous in the best possible way. Not polished, not careful — just loud and committed.
Sir Lord Baltimore centred on three players: John Garner (vocals, drums), Louis Dambra (guitar), and Gary Justin (bass). That compact lineup produced a surprisingly huge sound, with Garner’s simultaneous drumming and lead vocals giving the band a particularly raw edge.
Their chemistry and unfiltered approach helped secure their later reputation as cult favourites among proto-metal, stoner rock, and heavy psych listeners.
Expect heavy blues-rooted riffs, psychedelic overtones, and a rough-edged delivery that predates — and predicts — much of what heavy metal would become. The songs are direct, loud, and often gloriously overdriven. There is structure there, but it is held together with amplifiers rather than caution.
It is early heavy rock with the safety rails removed.
We stock Sir Lord Baltimore audio releases on CD and vinyl only. Availability can change as pressings come and go, so it is worth acting quickly if a title appears. Notable releases include:
Kingdom Come (1970) – debut album and a recognised cornerstone of early heavy metal and proto-doom
Sir Lord Baltimore (1971) – second album, pushing their heavy psychedelic and proto-metal direction further
Sir Lord Baltimore III Raw (2006) – later-era recordings capturing the band’s enduring weight and attitude
Together, these releases document a band that helped lay groundwork for heavier genres while sounding like no one else entirely.
