Thergothon are a Finnish doom metal band formed in late 1990 by Niko Skorpio Sirkiä on vocals and keyboards, Jori Sjöroos on drums, and Mikko Ruotsalainen on guitar. Originally a death metal act, they evolved into a slow, crushingly heavy doom metal band, their sound later described as the pure embodiment of sadness and despair in musical form. In early 1991, they recruited local friend Sami Kaveri as a second guitarist, and that November they recorded the demo tape Fhtagn-nagh Yog-Sothothâ, inspired by H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos.
In Autumn 1992, Thergothon began work on their debut album, Stream From the Heavens. Two tracks from their earlier demo were reworked for the release, and non-metal influences—including prog, goth, ambient, and experimental music—helped shape the atmospheric, sorrowful sound that would define them. Though the band disbanded in 1993, the album was eventually released in 1994, earning cult status within the underground metal scene.
Thergothon are widely regarded as one of the originators of the “Funeral Doom” genre, a style that emerged in the mid-to-late 1990s and continues to influence doom metal bands around the world. Their work is recognised for its slow tempos, oppressive atmosphere, and emotional depth—music that feels as monumental as it does mournful.
