Formed by singer and songwriter Mike Scott in the early 1980s, The Waterboys have navigated multiple line-ups and musical directions over their long, genre-defying career. Early albums such as The Waterboys (1983) and A Pagan Place (1984) introduced the so-called “Big Music” sound, a term taken from a track on the latter album. Scott described the concept as a metaphor for ‘seeing God’s signature in the world,’ an expansive, almost cinematic approach to rock that combined soaring guitars, dramatic arrangements, and deeply expressive vocals. The culmination of this style came with This Is the Sea (1985), which featured the band’s most celebrated hit, the Ivor Novello-winning single “The Whole of the Moon”, a song that remains emblematic of the band’s grand, ambitious sound.
Over the years, The Waterboys have continually evolved, incorporating elements of folk, Celtic, and alternative rock while maintaining Scott’s distinctive lyrical voice.
