And So I Watch You From Afar are a Northern Irish instrumental rock band from Belfast, formed in 2005. Known for their energetic performances, intricate guitar work and adventurous songwriting, the band combine post-rock, math rock, progressive and experimental influences to create music that balances technical precision with explosive intensity.
Their largely instrumental sound is built around interlocking guitars, driving bass and dynamic drumming, moving between intricate passages, soaring melodies and powerful rhythmic sections. Although often associated with post-rock and math rock, their music also draws on the energy of heavier rock and experimental music, giving them a distinctive identity within the instrumental scene.
And So I Watch You From Afar began when guitarists Rory Friers and Tony Wright and drummer Chris Wee came together with bassist Jonathan Adger. The four-piece developed their sound around Belfast and quickly built a reputation for energetic live performances and intricate musicianship. After releasing their early EPs, the band issued their self-titled debut album in 2009 through Smalltown America, followed by Gangs in 2011, which became their first album to chart in Ireland and helped establish them beyond Northern Ireland.
The band released two albums with Tony Wright before he left in 2011 to focus on his solo project VerseChorusVerse. He was replaced by Niall Kennedy, who initially joined for touring before becoming a full-time member and contributing to All Hail Bright Futures (2013). The band continued developing their sound through Heirs (2015) and The Endless Shimmering (2017), while Jonathan Adger later left the band and was replaced on bass by Rory Friers' brother Ewen Friers in 2021.
Their ambitious Jettison (2022) explored a more expansive sound, incorporating orchestral arrangements and spoken-word contributions, while Megafauna (2024) returned to a more direct and energetic expression of their established style. The current lineup consists of Rory Friers and Niall Kennedy on guitars, Ewen Friers on bass and Chris Wee on drums.
