PAIN: Industrial Metal, Electronic Rock and Futuristic Aggression

PAIN is the long-running industrial metal project created in 1996 by Swedish multi-instrumentalist and producer Peter Tägtgren. Tägtgren, who is also the vocalist and guitarist of Hypocrisy and the producer behind his own recording studio The Abyss, built Pain as a one-man-band project originally formed as a “hobby” outlet for his interest in blending metal with electronic music. The project blends Industrial metal, Electronic rock and synth-driven experimentation into a sound that is both heavy and highly melodic, often pairing aggressive production with a tongue-in-cheek, futuristic edge.

Unlike many of the more overtly serious acts in the industrial scene, Pain often incorporates a sense of irony and playfulness into its presentation, while still delivering tightly produced, riff-driven tracks built on electronic sequencing, distorted guitars and driving rhythms.

A Project Built on Contrast

From the outset, Pain was designed as a creative outlet separate from Peter Tägtgren’s death metal roots, allowing for more experimentation with electronic elements and accessible song structures. The result is a hybrid style that moves between industrial heaviness, synth-pop sensibilities and rock-driven hooks.

Early releases such as Pain (1997) and Rebirth (1999) established the project’s foundation, combining mechanical beats with guitar-driven aggression. The breakthrough came with Nothing Remains the Same (2002), which introduced a more polished, anthemic sound that expanded Pain’s audience beyond the industrial underground.

Later albums such as Cynic Paradise, You Only Live Twice and Coming Home continued to refine this balance between heaviness and melody, often featuring electronic layering, clean vocal hooks and high-production industrial textures.
