Pallbearer are an American Doom Metal band formed in 2008 in Little Rock, Arkansas. Built on slow, expansive songwriting and emotionally driven melodies, they are known for creating heavy music that balances crushing riffs with reflective, immersive atmosphere.
Pallbearer were formed in 2008 by Brett Campbell and Joseph D. Rowland, who met as students at the University of Central Arkansas. The pair previously played together in an experimental project called SPORTS before beginning work on what would become Pallbearer.
They were later joined by guitarist Devin Holt and drummer David Dobbs, who was subsequently replaced by Zach Stine. This early line-up recorded and self-released a three-track demo in 2010, helping establish their slow, melodic approach to Doom Metal.
In 2011, Pallbearer signed to Profound Lore Records, marking a major step forward in their development. Around this period, drummer Mark Lierly joined the band, solidifying the line-up following the recording of their debut album.
The band’s debut full-length, Sorrow and Extinction (2012), brought immediate critical acclaim and established Pallbearer as a major force in modern doom. The album received Best New Music recognition from Pitchfork and was listed among the best albums of the year by outlets including Spin and NPR.
This release set the foundation for their reputation, combining classic doom influences with a strong melodic identity and emotionally charged songwriting.
Across their work, Pallbearer focus on long-form compositions built around gradual development, layered guitars, and evolving dynamics. Their sound draws from traditional Doom Metal but is equally defined by atmosphere and melody, giving their music a reflective and immersive quality.
Following the impact of their debut, the band continued to refine and expand their approach across subsequent releases. While remaining rooted in slow, heavy composition, Pallbearer have developed a broader emotional and sonic range, helping to shape the modern interpretation of doom metal through a balance of weight, restraint, and atmosphere.
