Portrait are a Swedish heavy metal band formed in Kristianstad in 2005. They are widely regarded as one of the leading bands in the modern traditional metal revival, heavily influenced by the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) and classic occult-tinged heavy metal.
Known for their dark atmosphere, soaring vocals, and vintage-inspired songwriting, Portrait helped bring a darker, more theatrical edge to the Scandinavian traditional metal scene.
Portrait’s sound is defined by melodic yet sinister guitar work, expressive vocals, and a strong emphasis on mysticism, occult themes, and classic heavy metal aesthetics. Their style draws heavily from early Mercyful Fate, Iron Maiden, and similar 1980s influences.
