Russian Circles are an American instrumental post-metal band from Chicago, Illinois, formed in 2004. Built around guitar, bass and drums, the trio have developed a distinctive sound that moves between delicate atmosphere, crushing riffs and huge dynamic shifts without relying on vocals.
Across more than two decades, Russian Circles have steadily expanded the possibilities of instrumental heavy music. Their records combine intricate guitar work, powerful rhythm sections and carefully controlled tension, creating music that can feel both intensely physical and deeply atmospheric.
Russian Circles have always treated dynamics as a central part of their songwriting. Quiet passages gradually give way to towering walls of distortion, while intricate melodies and rhythmic changes keep the music moving without sacrificing its sense of weight.

Guidance (2016) – A record shaped by stark contrasts, moving between intricate melodies, crushing metallic sections and expansive atmospheric moments.
Blood Year (2019) – One of the band's most direct and aggressive records, bringing their heavier side firmly to the forefront.
Gnosis (2022) – The band's eighth studio album, continuing their evolution towards a particularly dense and forceful interpretation of instrumental post-metal.
Nine (2026) – Released on 28 August 2026 through Sargent House, the band's ninth full-length pushes further into their heavier side while retaining the atmospheric contrasts that have defined their work.
Russian Circles have become one of the defining names in modern instrumental post-rock and post-metal. Their ability to create enormous, emotionally charged compositions without a vocalist has made their music particularly effective both on record and on stage.
