1349 are a Norwegian Black metal band from Oslo, formed in 1997 and named after the year the Black Death reached Norway, an event that wiped out a significant portion of the population and marked the end of the country’s so-called Golden Age. The name reflects the band’s commitment to bleak atmosphere, historical weight, and the harsher traditions of the genre.
The band rose from the ashes of Alvheim in 1997, with Olav Bergene (Ravn) handling vocals and drums, alongside Tjalve (guitars), Tor Risdal Stavenes (Seidemann) on bass, and Balfori (guitars). Prior to this, Ravn and Seidemann were active in Hofdingi Myrkra, a project that began in 1994 before evolving into Alvheim.
From these early foundations, 1349 developed a sound rooted firmly in second wave black metal, combining relentless speed with a cold, oppressive atmosphere. Their approach leans heavily on blast-driven drumming, sharp guitar work, and raw, cutting vocals, maintaining a clear link to the genre’s Norwegian origins.
Albums such as Liberation, Demonoir, and The Infernal Pathway highlight their ability to balance intensity with structure, delivering material that remains consistent in tone while refining their execution over time.
The current line-up features Tor Risdal Stavenes (Seidemann) on bass, Olav Bergene (Ravn) on vocals, Idar Burheim (Archaon) on guitars and backing vocals, and Kjetil-Vidar Haraldstad (Frost) on drums. Over the years, the band has also worked with a number of additional musicians in a live setting, contributing to their stage presence without altering the core line-up.
