Alabama Thunderpussy are an American southern/stoner metal band from Richmond, Virginia, formed in 1996. Known for their thick, grooving riffs, bluesy undertones, and unapologetically heavy sound, Alabama Thunderpussy have carved out a place in the American heavy music landscape that blends southern rock swagger with sludge and traditional metal power.
Emerging from Richmond’s underground metal scene, the band quickly gained recognition for their energetic live shows and riff-driven songwriting. Their music balances crushing heaviness with southern groove, creating tracks that feel both urgent and indulgent — a proper blend of metal grit and southern heat.
Alabama Thunderpussy parted ways with Man's Ruin Records and singer Johnny Throckmorton early in their career, signing to Relapse Records and hiring new frontman Johnny Weills. Weills performed vocals on the album Fulton Hill, released in May 2004. By the time of the following album, Open Fire, Weills had left the band to form Danballah in Columbus, Ohio, and was replaced by Kyle Thomas, formerly of New Orleans bands Floodgate and Exhorder.
The current lineup features Kyle Thomas on vocals (2006–2008, 2022–present), Erik Larson on guitar (1996–2008, 2022–present), Ryan Lake on guitar (2001–2008, 2022–present), Sam Krivanec on bass (1998–2001, 2022–present), and Bryan Cox on drums (1996–2008, 2022–present). Together, they maintain the band’s signature combination of groove, southern swagger, and unrelenting heaviness.
Alabama Thunderpussy are difficult to categorise strictly: part southern rock, part doom-laden metal, part stoner riffage, they excel at crafting songs that hit hard but also swing with an unmistakable groove.
Alabama Thunderpussy’s official releases showcase their evolution and versatility within heavy music:
