Alice in Chains: Grunge, Heavy Riffs, and Seattle Rock Legends

Alice in Chains are an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington in 1987 by guitarist and vocalist Jerry Cantrell, drummer Sean Kinney, vocalist Layne Staley and bassist Mike Starr. Staley and Starr are former members whose contributions helped establish the band's distinctive sound and lasting influence. Since 2006, the band's line-up has consisted of vocalist/guitarists Jerry Cantrell and William DuVall, bassist Mike Inez and drummer Sean Kinney.

Known for blending Grunge, Heavy Metal, Alternative Metal and Hard Rock, Alice in Chains became one of the defining bands of the 1990s. Their music combines crushing guitar riffs, haunting vocal harmonies and introspective songwriting, creating a distinctive sound that continues to influence generations of rock and metal musicians.

From Seattle's grunge movement to modern rock icons

Emerging from Seattle's thriving music scene, Alice in Chains quickly stood apart through their darker, heavier approach to grunge. The vocal interplay between Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell became one of the band's defining characteristics, while their blend of heavy riffs and emotionally charged lyrics earned widespread critical acclaim.

Following the release of Dirt, bassist Mike Starr left the band due to differing priorities and was replaced by former Ozzy Osbourne bassist Mike Inez, who had become friends with the band while touring together on Ozzy Osbourne's No More Tours tour.

Although Alice in Chains never officially disbanded, the band entered an extended period of inactivity from 1996 onwards due largely to Layne Staley's struggles with substance abuse. Following the death of his former fiancée, Demri Parrott, in October 1996, Staley became increasingly reclusive, making only occasional public appearances. After Staley's death in 2002, the band remained on hiatus before reuniting in 2005. William DuVall joined in 2006 as rhythm guitarist and co-lead vocalist alongside Jerry Cantrell, marking the beginning of a new chapter for Alice in Chains.

Albums including Facelift, Dirt, Alice in Chains, Black Gives Way to Blue and The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here before Rainier Fog chart the band's evolution across multiple decades. Despite line-up changes and personal tragedy, Alice in Chains have continued to build on their legacy while remaining true to the sound that made them one of the most respected bands of the grunge era.

Today, Alice in Chains remain one of the most influential names in alternative metal and hard rock, recognised for their enduring catalogue, exceptional musicianship and powerful live performances.
