The Almighty – Hard Rock, Heavy Metal and Scottish Rock

The Almighty are a Scottish hard rock and heavy metal band from Glasgow, formed in 1988. After first disbanding in 1996, they reunited from 1999 to 2002, again from 2006 to 2009, and reformed for a third time in 2023, reaffirming their status as one of Scotland's most respected hard rock bands.

The original lineup consisted of vocalist and guitarist Ricky Warwick, guitarist Andy “Tantrum” McCafferty, bassist Floyd London and drummer Stump Monroe. Although The Almighty experienced lineup changes throughout their career, their current lineup sees the original members reunited, bringing the band's story full circle. Warwick has also pursued a successful solo career and is known internationally for being the lead singer of Thin Lizzy and of Black Star Riders.

From Glasgow to International Recognition

Ricky Warwick, drummer Stump Monroe and bassist Floyd London were friends at school and had previously played together in the local band Rough Charm before being joined by guitarist Andy “Tantrum” McCafferty to form The Almighty. Although the members' musical roots were in punk rock, the band adopted a heavier hard rock and heavy metal direction during their early years, helping establish their distinctive sound on the UK rock circuit.

The band quickly gained attention through their energetic live performances and uncompromising approach, combining heavy riffs, memorable choruses and punk attitude with a more traditional hard rock and metal influence.

Their debut album, Blood, Fire & Love (1989), introduced audiences to the band's blend of hard rock and heavy metal, while Soul Destruction (1991) expanded their audience with stronger songwriting and a heavier sound. As the decade progressed, albums such as Powertrippin' and Crank showcased a more aggressive style that incorporated elements of alternative metal and groove metal, before later releases saw the band move closer towards their original punk influences.
