Anacrusis are an American progressive metal band from St. Louis, Missouri, formed in 1984. Known for their complex songwriting, unconventional structures and technically demanding musicianship, the band developed a distinctive approach to heavy music that pushed beyond the boundaries of conventional thrash.
Originally rooted in the aggressive sound of 1980s thrash metal, Anacrusis gradually incorporated progressive metal and atmospheric elements into their music. Their increasingly adventurous songwriting, darker melodies and willingness to experiment became defining characteristics of the band's later work.
The original lineup consisted of Kenn Nardi on vocals and guitar, Kevin Heidbreder on guitar, John Emery on bass and Mike Owen on drums. The band initially developed their sound around the emerging thrash metal scene of the 1980s, with their early material establishing the aggressive foundation they would later expand upon.
Their Annihilation Complete demo attracted significant attention, being voted Best Demo of 1987 by the readers of Metal Forces magazine, helping the band secure a recording deal with UK label Active Records and leading to their debut album, Suffering Hour, in 1988. Reason followed in 1990, further developing their technical and progressive tendencies, while Manic Impressions (1991) and Screams and Whispers (1993), released after signing with Metal Blade Records, demonstrated how far Anacrusis had moved beyond conventional thrash metal. Their increasingly progressive songwriting and technical approach established them as a forward-thinking act within the genre.
Following Screams and Whispers and a European tour with Death, Anacrusis disbanded in 1993. More than 15 years later, their early material was revisited through archival releases before the original lineup reunited for performances beginning in 2009. In 2010, they released Hindsight: Suffering Hour & Reason Revisited, featuring newly recorded versions of their first two albums. The band reunited again in 2019 to commemorate the reissue of their catalogue through Metal Blade Records, with their final concert taking place in St. Louis on 7 December 2019.
