Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe were an English progressive rock band active from 1988 to 1990, bringing together four former members of Yes: vocalist Jon Anderson, guitarist Steve Howe, keyboardist Rick Wakeman and drummer Bill Bruford. The group reunited four musicians from one of Yes's most celebrated eras, creating a project that allowed them to explore the progressive rock style and musical ideas associated with their earlier work.
Their music combined intricate arrangements, extended compositions, virtuosic musicianship and atmospheric textures, drawing on the distinctive sound that had helped establish these musicians as major figures in progressive rock. The resulting album and world tour became an important chapter in the history of Yes and its former members.
Before leaving Yes in 1988, singer Jon Anderson felt increasingly constrained by the band's commercial and pop-oriented direction during the 1980s. He subsequently began working on new material with Steve Howe, Rick Wakeman and Bill Bruford, bringing together four musicians from Yes's celebrated 1970s era and giving them an opportunity to return to a more progressive approach. Bruford asked his King Crimson bandmate Tony Levin to join as an unofficial fifth member, with Levin performing as a session player on the self-titled album.
Released in 1989 through Arista Records, Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe showcased the quartet's return to expansive progressive rock, featuring intricate arrangements, extended compositions and virtuosic performances. The album was followed by a successful world tour, with Levin performing on most dates. When illness prevented him from completing some of the final shows, Jeff Berlin stepped in as his replacement on bass. The tour was later documented on the live album An Evening of Yes Music Plus.
Plans for a second Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe album were eventually overtaken by the reunion of the four musicians with the other members of Yes. Material developed for the proposed follow-up was incorporated into Yes's Union (1991), with Tony Levin again contributing bass to the ABWH-related material. The resulting eight-member Yes lineup brought Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe together with Chris Squire, Trevor Rabin, Tony Kaye and Alan White, bringing the short-lived ABWH chapter to an end.
