Atrophy are an American thrash metal band formed in Tucson, Arizona in 1986. The band became known for combining precise guitar work, rapid-fire riffs and socially conscious lyrics, developing a technically proficient style during the golden age of American thrash metal.
Their music tackles subjects including social injustice, political hypocrisy, violence and addiction, balancing sharp lyrical themes with tightly played riffs and energetic performances. Atrophy's first two albums, Socialized Hate and Violent by Nature, established their place among the American thrash bands emerging during the late 1980s, while their later return introduced their music to a new generation.
Atrophy began as Heresy in 1986, formed by Chris Lykins, James Gulotta and Brian Zimmerman, with Tim Kelly and Rick Skowron later joining the band. After adopting the Atrophy name, the group recorded the Chemical Dependency and Advanced Promo demos in 1987, attracting the attention of Roadrunner Records. Their debut album, Socialized Hate, followed in 1988, combining technically precise thrash with lyrics addressing social and political issues.
Violent by Nature followed in 1990, and Atrophy toured extensively in the United States and Europe alongside bands including Sacred Reich, Venom, Coroner, Slayer and Exodus. The band eventually split following their original run before returning to activity in 2015. In 2020, the European tour was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic, after which vocalist Brian Zimmerman departed the band. The remaining members recruited a new vocalist, Mike Niggl, and continued under the name Scars of Atrophy.
After a few months of inactivity, Zimmerman revived Atrophy in 2021 with a completely new lineup. This incarnation eventually recorded Asylum, released by Massacre Records in March 2024 and marking the band's first studio album in 34 years. Zimmerman was joined on the recording by Mark Coglan, Nathan Montalvo, Josh Gibbs and Jonas Schütz, with the lineup subsequently changing again before Kris Kerby took over drums in 2024.
