Coffins is a Japanese doom/death metal band founded in 1996 in Tokyo. Renowned for their crushing heaviness, murky atmosphere, and uncompromising approach, Coffins have established themselves as one of Japan’s leading extreme metal acts. Their discography includes several full-length albums, but also many other formats, particularly splits with bands from various nationalities, reflecting their underground metal connections worldwide.
Coffins’ music blends slow, monolithic riffing with faster, brutal passages, featuring grinding, detuned guitars, pummelling drums, and guttural vocal deliveries that convey sheer menace. The band has drawn comparisons to influential acts like Bolt Thrower, Evoken, and Funeral, yet Coffins maintain a style distinctly rooted in Tokyo’s underground metal scene.
Throughout their nearly 30-year history, the band has seen several line-up shifts, notably transitioning from a trio to a quartet in the early 2010s. Bungo Uchino, a founding member, played drums from 1996–1997 and has handled guitar and vocals since 1998. The current line-up also includes Satoshi Hikida on drums since 2011, Jun Tokita on vocals since 2013, and Masafumi Atake on bass and vocals since 2015. Together, they carry Coffins’ signature crushing heaviness, ensuring each release preserves the oppressive and immersive qualities that define the band’s enduring presence in extreme metal.
