Convulse are a Finnish death metal band from Nokia, known for their raw early sound and later evolution into more atmospheric and progressive territory. Emerging from the early 1990s death metal scene, Convulse helped shape the distinctive Finnish approach to the genre, blending heaviness with a slightly more off-kilter, melodic edge.
Active across multiple periods — 1988–1990 (as S.D.S.), 1990–1994, and from 2012 to the present — Convulse first gained attention with a series of demos before releasing their debut album World Without God in 1991. That record remains a cornerstone of early Finnish death metal, combining mid-paced, crushing riffs with grim atmosphere and memorable songwriting.
After their initial run ended in the mid-1990s, the band later returned with a broader musical approach. While still rooted in death metal, their later material introduced more melodic, psychedelic, and progressive elements, giving their sound a more expansive feel without losing its weight.
Outside of Convulse, members were also involved in other projects. They formed the side project Puhelinkoppi, which leaned towards a hardcore punk/metal hybrid, known for its deliberately offensive lyrical approach and, somewhat surprisingly, wider recognition within Finland.
Additionally, Rami Jämsä recorded with the hard rock band Havoc, appearing on the 1989 7-inch Passage in My Life / Surrounded by Pain.
The current line-up consists of Rami Jämsä (vocals, guitars), Olli Heino (bass), and Matias Rokio (drums), with both Heino and Rokio joining in 2026, continuing the band’s later-era evolution.
