English Dogs were an English punk band formed in Grantham, Lincolnshire in 1981. Originally emerging from the UK hardcore punk scene, the band became known for their fast, aggressive sound that helped bridge the gap between hardcore punk and early thrash metal in the United Kingdom.
Led at various points by vocalist Wadey (Adrian Webb), English Dogs gained recognition for their energetic performances and their role in shaping the early UK crossover scene alongside bands such as Broken Bones and Discharge. Their sound evolved over time from raw hardcore punk into a more metallic, thrash-influenced direction.
English Dogs’ sound combines hardcore punk, Oi!-influenced street punk, and early thrash metal elements. Their music is fast, aggressive, and direct, often featuring anthemic choruses alongside politically aware and socially grounded lyrics.
The band are especially recognised for their transitional role in the development of UK crossover thrash, helping pave the way for later extreme metal and hardcore hybrid styles.
