Enslaved are a Norwegian extreme metal band formed in Haugesund in 1991 by Ivar Bjørnson and Grutle Kjellson. Initially emerging from the early Norwegian black metal scene, the band quickly distinguished themselves through their incorporation of Viking mythology, progressive structures, and increasingly expansive musical experimentation.
Over time, Enslaved evolved from raw black metal origins into one of the most respected progressive extreme metal bands in the world, blending black metal foundations with progressive rock, psychedelic elements, and atmospheric composition.
Enslaved’s sound began as raw, frostbitten black metal rooted in Norse mythology and pagan history, later expanding into complex progressive arrangements, clean vocals, and experimental sound design. Their music frequently explores themes of Norse mythology, cosmic philosophy, existentialism, and human evolution.
The band are especially recognised for bridging early Norwegian black metal intensity with ambitious progressive structures and long-form compositional storytelling.
