EX Eye are an experimental post-metal quartet founded in 2016 in New York, USA. The band was formed by saxophonist Colin Stetson, alongside Liturgy’s Greg Fox on drums, synthesist Shahzad Ismaily (Secret Chiefs 3, Ceramic Dog), and guitarist Toby Summerfield (Never Enough Hope, Crush Kill Destroy, Larval). The project grew out of sessions for Stetson’s SORROW: A Reimagining of Gorecki’s 3rd Symphony, on which both Ismaily and Fox had played. Summerfield and Stetson, longtime friends and collaborators since high school in Ann Arbor, Michigan, completed the line-up.
Almost immediately after forming, EX Eye made a series of festival appearances, including Roskilde Festival in Denmark, Red Bull Music Academy in Montreal, CTM Festival in Germany, and Eaux Claires Fest in the U.S. Their intense live performances and crushing studio demos caught the attention of Relapse Records, leading to a signing.
Their self-titled debut album, EX Eye, was recorded live at Ismaily’s Figure 8 Studios in Brooklyn, New York, and released in June 2017. The album captures the band’s explosive live energy and avant-garde approach, blending jazz, noise, and extreme metal into a uniquely experimental post-metal sound.
