Spook the Horses are a post-metal and experimental band from Wellington, New Zealand, known for crafting music that balances quiet desolation with breathtaking intensity. Their sound evokes abandoned spaces, atmospheric landscapes, and emotionally charged crescendos — the perfect soundtrack to places where people used to live.
Formed in 2009, Spook the Horses feature Alex Ross, Ben Dentice, Callum Gay, Donnie Cuzens, Max Telfer, and Zach Meech. Emerging from Wellington’s experimental music scene, they have opened for Neurosis and The Ocean, and are signed to Pelagic Records, the label founded in 2009 by Robin Staps to re-release work by his band, The Ocean.
Although geographically distant from Pelagic’s home, Spook the Horses are aligned musically with the label’s ethos. Their music is difficult to categorise: rooted in post-metal templates yet constantly in flux, swelling, cresting, sometimes calm, sometimes crashing with overwhelming intensity. Even the band’s name evokes the ocean — white horses rolling into the shore, waves that can surprise with gentleness or sweep you off your feet with force.
Callum Gay reflects: “We’ve always been both a heavy and a quiet band. An entire album of our prettier, more bittersweet inclinations demands a reply of our most aggressive and confrontational. The pendulum must swing back the other way.”
