Whiplash are an American thrash metal band formed in Passaic, New Jersey in 1984. They are widely regarded as one of the key early East Coast thrash bands, known for their raw speed, aggressive style, and dedication to old-school thrash intensity.
Fronted by guitarist/vocalist Tony Portaro, Whiplash helped shape the US underground thrash movement alongside bands such as Nuclear Assault and Overkill.
Whiplash’s sound is defined by fast, straightforward riffing, stripped-down production, and relentless energy. Their music is heavily influenced by hardcore punk and early Slayer-style thrash.
