Angels & Airwaves are an American rock band formed in San Diego, California in 2005 by vocalist and guitarist Tom DeLonge. Combining alternative rock, space rock, electronic textures and anthemic songwriting, the band developed a distinctive sound built around atmospheric guitars, synthesizers, driving rhythms and expansive melodies.
Their music moved beyond the pop-punk style associated with DeLonge's earlier work, embracing a more ambitious and cinematic approach. Across their catalogue, Angels & Airwaves have explored themes of hope, relationships, technology and the human experience, creating music that balances intimate songwriting with a large-scale alternative rock sound.
Following blink-182's hiatus in 2005, Tom DeLonge formed Angels & Airwaves with guitarist David Kennedy, drummer Atom Willard and bassist Ryan Sinn. DeLonge had already been developing the project for several months, and the new band allowed him to pursue a more expansive musical direction. The lineup brought together musicians with connections to blink-182, Box Car Racer, The Offspring and The Distillers, helping establish the project as a full band rather than simply a solo venture.
Their debut album, We Don't Need to Whisper, arrived in 2006 and introduced the band's atmospheric, synth-driven approach, featuring singles including The Adventure and It Hurts. I-Empire followed in 2007, expanding their sound with larger arrangements and anthemic songwriting. The band continued developing their ambitious style through the two-part Love project, released as Love (2010) and Love: Part Two (2011), before returning with The Dream Walker in 2014.
After a period of reduced activity, Angels & Airwaves returned with new music in 2019 and released their sixth studio album, Lifeforms, in 2021. The album marked a return to elements of the band's earlier sound while incorporating punk rock and post-hardcore influences. The current lineup features Tom DeLonge, David Kennedy, Ilan Rubin and Matt Rubano, although the band has remained on hiatus since 2022.
